Post-Quarantine Road Trips

As May ends and June begins, the next phase of reopening of businesses and states across the country begins. Traveling in a post-coronavirus world will not be the same as before. Now that the coronavirus has forced millions of people to stay home, the Earth in many places has “come back to life,” where people have overrun some of the most beautiful places that exist. For example, the canals of Venice are crystal clear, and the air pollution in large cities like St. Louis, San Francisco, and New York has been reduced. And in some places, wildlife has returned to places we humans have overtaken in the past. So, what does this mean for the future of travel, when we strap our family in the car and hit the road soon?

Road Trip Tips

Before you leave your home,

  • Check your tire pressure.
  • Check your vehicle’s engine coolant.
  • Don’t forget your travel bags (suitcases, backpacks, electronics, & travel essentials)
  • Check the conditions of your destination, and not just the weather conditions; rather, ensure you are not headed for a “hot spot.” Traveling to a hot spot can be disaster if you are not prepared.
  • Moreover, check to ensure the state you are heading to does not still have a traveling self-quarantine in effect. Local authorities can require self-quarantine for as long as 14 days if you travel state-to-state.
  • Pack masks and gloves for everyone in case you are headed somewhere that is a “hot spot,” and do not forget the hand sanitizer!
  • Pack drinks and snacks so you can minimize the number of stops you have to experience and keep the stops to gassing the vehicle and for restroom stops.

During the Drive

  • Remain aware of your surroundings and the conditions of the locations you travel through. Stopping in a location where a mask is required but being unprepared to wear a mask can cause unnecessary hiccups in your travel.
  • Limit your stops, if you can, to gas and restroom stops and use drive-thrus, as many restaurants through the United States are limited to carry-out and delivery for customers.

Do not just wing it, especially in the coming months. With business opening up at half capacity, many places will be full and at capacity quickly, so make sure to call ahead to places such as hotels, restaurants, museums, and other lodging locations you may be using during your road trip. You do not want to be stranded without a place to stay or eat.

Good News

During your post-quarantine road trips, you will find a blip of good news during your travel. You will pay much less for gasoline than what you may be accustomed to! Saving money at the pump can make a huge difference in the quality of the road trip you and your family can have. More money to use on entertainment and lodging is a great incentive. The low gas prices may be here to stay for a while, as oil prices have stayed relatively low throughout the month of May, and the outlook is that they will remain low throughout the month of June as well.

We are excited that the state of Missouri is beginning to reopen, and we are planning our favorite road trips, just like you are. But we must remain vigilant and prepared for what the post-coronavirus world is going to be like. Make sure you and your traveling companions are prepared and know what is ahead of them during your road trip! We cannot wait to see you on the road.
