Outdoor Trails to Visit in St. Louis Area

Are you worried that because playgrounds are closed, you cannot go out for some fresh air and exercise? Well you are in luck, as most parks and trails in the area are still open and available for your whole family’s exploration! Whether you are a hiker, runner, cyclist, or inline skater, there are many amazing outdoor parks you and the family can enjoy together. We have compiled a few of our favorite parks for outdoor activity and we are going to share them with you below along with important information about the parks.

Lime Kiln Loop Trail

Are you looking for a great hiking trail for exercise? The Lime Kiln Loop Trail is perfect for you! You will start in the lower part of the park, and from there you will have a steep climb up to the ridgeline. The terrain will flatten out atop the ridge then there will be another steep descent leading back to the beginning of the trail area. The trail is runner-friendly, but be careful for rocks and roots along the trail. Dogs on a leash are welcome! For more info on the trail, visit here.

Location: Rockwoods Reservation, 2751 Glencoe Road, Wildwood.

Buford Mountain State Forest Trail

This trail is for the most experienced hikers. The Buford Mountain State Forest Trail is a 9.1-mile loop trail that features a beautiful river and steep rocky terrain and excellent views, including views of the Belleview Valley. You will climb 1,720 feet to the peak of the trail and back around the mountain. Make sure you bring your best hiking boots and plenty of water!

Location: Eight miles north of Ironton, Mo. along highway 21, then two miles north on Highway U.

Rock Hollow Trail

If you and the family are bicyclists, this trail is perfect for you. The trail is asphalt-surfaced and 10-feet wide, so it is perfect for cyclists starting their journey onto other trails. The trail is fairly flat with benches along the way, in case you need to take a break. The trail ends at the five-mile Al Foster trail, at which point you can turn around or progress to other trails, including the Bluff View Trail or the Hamilton Carr Trail. The Rock Hollow Trail is one of the most attractive trails in the regions. The trail is currently 2.3 miles long.

Location: 777 Ridge Road Glencoe, Mo.

The trails we have listed are just a few of our favorite trails for the whole family to enjoy. Remember to bring lots of water and any hiking supplies you may have, including a fully charged cell phone, GPS, and appropriate footwear.
